What is the Flower of Life?

This sacred geometry symbol is so ancient that its origin is not fully known. It has been identified worldwide, in different periods, in several sacred monuments.

The oldest known representation to this day was found in the palace of King Assurbanipal in Dur-Sharrukin in Assyria, dating back to 645 BC.

Another representation of the Flower of Life can be seen on one of the granite columns of the Temple of Osiris in Abydos, the ancient city of Egypt.

Abydos is the first place of worship of Osiris, the god of the Dead, and seemed to represent the passage to eternity for the ancient Egyptians. Abydos, as the cult center of Osiris, was then the main access to the afterlife.

The symbol of the Flower of Life encompasses many geometric forms such as the Platonic solids, the Metatron’s Cube, the Vesica Piscis, and Leonardo da Vinci’s famous Vitruvian Man. This enters the realm of sacred geometry. These are forms with perfect proportions, as observed in nature. Based on the golden ratio (PHI), it served as the foundation for the construction of famous monuments such as pyramids, cathedrals, and ancient temples.

It is said to be present in everything, in cells, molecular structures… and is the very origin of life.

The Platonic solids are five regular polyhedra that have characteristics unique to them, as they are the basis of all structures. These include the tetrahedron, the hexahedron (or cube), the octahedron, the dodecahedron, and the icosahedron.

These geometric symbols are regular convex polyhedra, and there are only five of them. In order to be regular, a polyhedron must have the same number of regular polygons at each of its vertices. In addition, the sum of the angles at the vertices of the regular polygons must be strictly less than 360°.

Mathematically, the Euler’s formula (F+S-A=2), where F is the number of faces, A is the number of edges, and S is the number of vertices, is applicable to the Platonic solids.

How to Draw the Flower of Life?

This sacred symbol is formed by 19 evenly spaced circles with symmetry.

Although it may seem difficult to reproduce at first, it is actually quite easy once you understand how it is formed.

The indispensable tool is, of course, the compass, and a surface to draw on.

Take your compass and draw the first circle. While keeping the same diameter, draw a second circle by placing the compass tip on a point of the first circle. You will notice that the intersections are actually the central points of each circle.

Then, place the compass tip on one of the intersections of the two previously drawn circles and draw a third circle. Continue drawing the four other circles using the same method, and you will then obtain the Seed of Life.

Next, add 12 additional circles around the Seed of Life, following the same process.

Done? Perfect, now all that’s left is to add the semicircles to complete the design.
