What is the purpose of the Flower of Life?

This sacred geometry symbol is so ancient that its true origin is not known. It has been discovered in various locations across the globe, at different times, in several sacred buildings.

The oldest known representation to date is visible in the palace of King Assurbanipal at Dur-Sharrukin in Assyria, dating back to 645 BC.

Another representation of the Flower of Life can be found on one of the granite columns of the temple of Osiris in Abydos, an ancient city of Egypt.

Abydos is the main place of worship of Osiris, the god of the Dead, and seemed to embody the passage to eternity for the ancient Egyptians. Abydos, as the cult center of Osiris, was therefore the main gateway to the afterlife.

The symbol of the Flower of Life contains many geometric shapes such as the Platonic solids, the Metatron’s Cube, the Vesica Piscis, and Leonardo da Vinci’s famous Vitruvian Man. The Platonic solids are five regular polyhedra that possess specific characteristics that are unique to them, as they are the basis of all structures. These are the tetrahedron, hexahedron (or cube), octahedron, dodecahedron, and icosahedron.

These geometric symbols are regular convex polyhedra, and there are only five of them. Indeed, to be regular, a polyhedron must have the same number of regular polygons at each of its vertices. Furthermore, the sum of the angles at the vertex of regular polygons must be strictly less than 360°.

From a mathematical point of view, Euler’s formula (F+S-A=2), where F is the number of faces, A is the number of edges, and S is the number of vertices, is true for Platonic solids.

How to draw a Flower of Life?

This sacred symbol is formed by 19 regularly spaced circles that intersect symmetrically.

Although at first glance this figure may seem difficult to reproduce, it is actually quite easy once you understand how it is formed.

The essential tool is, of course, the compass, and a support.

Take your compass and draw the first circle. While maintaining the same distance, draw a second circle by positioning the compass tip on a point of the first circle’s line. You will notice that the intersections are actually the central points of each circle.

Then, place the compass tip on one of the intersections of the two circles previously drawn and draw a third circle. Continue drawing the four other circles using the same method and you will then obtain the Seed of Life.

Next, add 12 additional circles around the Seed of Life using the same process.

Done? Perfect, all that’s left is to add the semi-circles to complete the design.
