What Is the Fleur de Vie?

This symbol of sacred geometry is so ancient that its origins are not truly known. It has been found worldwide throughout different times in numerous sacred monuments.

The oldest known representation to date is found in the palace of King Assurbanipal in Dur-Sharrukin, Assyria, dating back to 645 BC.

Another depiction of the Fleur de Vie is found on one of the granite columns of the Temple of Osiris in Abydos, an ancient city in Egypt.

Abydos was the most important place of worship for Osiris, the god of the Dead, and was believed to be the gateway to eternity for the ancient Egyptians. As the cult center of Osiris, Abydos was the main access to the afterlife.

How to Draw the Fleur de Vie?

This sacred symbol is formed by nineteen evenly spaced circles that symmetrically overlap with each other.

Although it may initially seem difficult to reproduce, it’s actually quite simple once you understand how it’s formed.

The essential tool is, of course, a compass, and a supportive surface.

Take your compass and draw the first circle. While keeping the same diameter, draw a second circle by placing the compass tip on any point of the first circle. You’ll notice that the intersections are in fact the centers of each circle.

Next, place the compass tip on one of the intersections of the two previously drawn circles and draw a third circle. Continue drawing the four additional circles using the same method, and you’ll then have the seed of life.

After that, add 12 more circles around the seed of life using the same process.

Done? Perfect! Now, add the semi-circles to complete the design.
