What is the purpose of the Flower of Life?

This symbol of sacred geometry is so ancient that its origin is unknown. It has been found in various sites around the world, in different eras, in several sacred buildings.

The oldest known observation to date was discovered at the palace of King Ashurbanipal in Dur-Sharrukin, Assyria, dating back to 645 BC.

Another representation of the Flower of Life was discovered on one of the granite columns in the Temple of Osiris in Abydos, an ancient city in Egypt.

Abydos is the first place of worship of Osiris, the god of the Dead, and seemed to symbolize the passage to eternity for ancient Egyptians. Abydos, as the cult center of Osiris, was the main gateway to the afterlife.

The symbol of the Flower of Life contains many geometric shapes such as the Platonic solids, the Metatron’s Cube, the Vesica Piscis, and Leonardo da Vinci’s famous Vitruvian Man. Based on the golden ratio (PHI), it has enabled the construction of famous monuments such as pyramids, cathedrals, and ancient temples.

The Platonic Solids are five regular polyhedra that possess unique characteristics, as they are the basis of all structures. They are the tetrahedron, the hexahedron (or cube), the octahedron, the dodecahedron, and the icosahedron.

These geometric symbols are regular convex polyhedra, and there are only five of them. In order to be regular, a polyhedron must have the same number of regular polygons at each of its vertices. Additionally, the sum of the angles at the vertices of regular polygons must be less than 360°.

Mathematically, Euler’s formula (F+S-A=2), where F is the number of faces, A is the number of edges, and S is the number of vertices, applies to Platonic solids.

How to Draw the Flower of Life?

This geometric shape is composed of nineteen evenly spaced circles that overlap symmetrically.

Although this figure may seem difficult to reproduce at first glance, it is actually quite easy once you understand how it is formed.

The indispensable tool is, of course, the compass, and a surface to work on.

Take your compass and draw the first circle. While keeping the same distance, draw a second circle by positioning the compass point on a point of the first circle’s circumference. You will notice that the intersections are, in fact, the centers of each circle.

Then, place the compass point on one of the intersections of the previously drawn circles, and draw a third circle. Continue drawing the remaining four circles using the same method, and you will obtain the seed of life.

Next, add 12 additional circles around the seed of life using the same procedure.

Done? Perfect, all that’s left is to add the semi-circles to complete the pattern.
