What is the Flower of Life?

This symbol of sacred geometry is so ancient that we do not truly know the origin of its creation. It has been identified worldwide, in different eras, in numerous sacred structures.

The oldest known representation to date was discovered in the palace of King Assurbanipal in Dur-Sharrukin in Assyria, dating back to 645 BC.

Another representation of the Flower of Life can be seen on one of the granite columns in the Temple of Osiris in Abydos, an ancient city in Egypt.

Abydos is the first place of worship of Osiris, the god of the Dead, and seemed to represent the passage to eternity for the ancient Egyptians. Abydos, as the cult center of Osiris, was then the main access to the afterlife.

The symbol of the Flower of Life encompasses many geometric forms such as the Platonic solids, Metatron’s Cube, the Vesica Piscis, and Leonardo da Vinci’s famous Vitruvian Man. This delves into the realm of sacred geometry. They are forms with perfect proportions, as observed in nature. Based on the golden ratio (PHI), they facilitated the construction of famous monuments such as pyramids, cathedrals, and ancient temples.

The Platonic solids are five regular polyhedra with unique characteristics, as they are the foundation of all structures. These are the tetrahedron, hexahedron (or cube), octahedron, dodecahedron, and icosahedron.

These geometric symbols are regular convex polyhedra, and there are only five of them. In order to be regular, a polyhedron must have the same number of regular polygons at each of its vertices. Moreover, the sum of angles at the vertices of regular polygons must be strictly less than 360°.

From a mathematical point of view, the Euler’s formula (F + S – A = 2), where F is the number of faces, A is the number of edges, and S is the number of vertices, holds true for the Platonic solids.

How to Draw the Flower of Life?

This figure is formed by nineteen evenly spaced circles with symmetry.

Although it may seem difficult to reproduce at first glance, it is actually quite easy once you understand how it is formed.

The indispensable tool is, of course, the compass, and a surface.

Take your compass and draw a first circle. While keeping the same diameter, draw a second circle by positioning the compass tip on a point on the line of the first circle. You will notice that the intersections are, in fact, the centers of each circle.

Next, place the compass tip on one of the intersections of the two circles previously drawn and draw a third circle. Continue drawing the four additional circles using the same method, and you will then obtain the Seed of Life.

Then add 12 additional circles around the Seed of Life, following the same procedure.
